A woman who recently went through a divorce after she found out her husband was cheating on her decided she wanted to maintain her sense of humor through the split and the sale of their family home.
That’s why she made a “for sale” sign she found funny: “Husband left us for a 22-year-old…House For Sale by scorned, slightly bitter, newly single owner.”
She said she posted an image of the sign on Facebook at one o’clock on a Friday afternoon.
“I had the local news in my yard by five,” the Oregon woman told a Business Insider reporter.
She and her sign had gone viral.
Reporters likely expected to find a bitter, “hell hath no fury” kind of woman, but that isn’t who the 37-year-old self-employed photographer is. Instead, they found a woman determined to hang on to her sense of humor.
“The affair wasn’t fun and the end of my marriage wasn’t funny. It was catastrophic,” she said. “But (my ex-husband) is a funny guy and I like to think I’m funny, too.”
Her ex’s sense of humor is also apparently intact: He helped pay for the sign. The two are trying to avoid foreclosure and sell the house they shared as a married couple for a decade.
Neither one was expecting a blizzard of media attention over the sign. The woman says she was also unprepared for backlash: Some people are apparently criticizing her for putting her kids, ages three and seven, into a media circus.
She dismisses the criticism as “a little silly,” saying that her kids are already dealing with a difficult time packing up their toys and leaving the family home, but that they’ll all get through it.
“(My daughter) just turned three a month before (the affair) happened and I don’t want to waste her year of three curled up in a ball crying about what some guy did to me,” she said. “I don’t want to be that person. I don’t want my kids to have that mom.”
