After more than two decades practicing law, Attorney Jonathan Marks knows what you’re going through – and he starts problem-solving the moment you begin explaining your situation. His philosophy is simple: If you know exactly what to expect, your divorce process will go more smoothly than it would if you were always waiting for the proverbial shoe to drop.
But what really sets Jonathan apart from other attorneys is his “Why.” He began focusing solely on family law in 1998 because it allowed him to make an immediate, positive difference in his clients’ lives. From divorce issues such as child custody and support to complex financial matters related to spousal support, valuation of closely held businesses, the division of real estate, securities, retirement accounts, and business interests, Jonathan finds solutions that help set his clients up for future success. Jonathan uses his wide range of abilities, including alternative dispute resolution and trial skills, to relentlessly pursue what’s best for his clients and their families.

Family Law Attorney
To be a Fellow of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers means being elevated to the highest level of distinction and providing the highest quality of family law services you can find. Lawyers who have earned the right to be called a Fellow of the AAML have demonstrated unparalleled expertise and professionalism you would expect to experience from a lawyer of this caliber. AAML lawyers are recognized as the most qualified and excellent family lawyers in the United States.
Fellowship of the International Academy of Family Lawyers is by invitation only. The criteria to become a Fellow of the IAFL are rigorous, but achievable for those with significant expertise in their own jurisdiction and experience of international family law such as representing clients in extensive Hague Convention proceedings in the Federal District Court and Federal Court of Appeals.
The National Board of Trial Advocacy was the first American Bar Association accredited attorney board certifying agency in the world. NBTA offers board certification in eight areas of law including Family Law. But unlike the medical profession, which has embraced specialization and specialty certification, the legal profession has been slow to acknowledge publicly what it has known for years—nearly all lawyers specialize, but do so without substantiation beyond “reputation” or simply saying it’s so. Prior to the founding of the National Board of Trial Advocacy in 1977, no such mechanism existed for lawyers. Potential clients were forced to rely on word of mouth or advertisements when seeking legal help. Review any reputable source on the subject and they will all say the same thing—a successful trial lawyer requires significant knowledge and expertise beyond the general practice of law, and not every attorney is qualified or even capable of handling every case. By becoming NBTA-certified, lawyers prove themselves to have extensive experience in their specialty and to be the most qualified in their professional field.
Established in 1983, The Best Lawyers in AmericaⓇ has steadfastly committed to its rigorous peer-review process for over four decades. Since then, the same tried and tested peer-review process has been used consistently for more than 40 years. While the scope and scale of this publication has dramatically grown over the past four decades, the core mission of Best Lawyers to highlight the top legal talent in America has remained unchanged.

In 1887, Martindale-Hubbell created this peer-review system for fellow lawyers, where attorneys can be reviewed by other attorneys. Before you can receive a peer-review rating, you must first be evaluated for the “V” part of the rating. If you’re endorsed with a “V” (meaning “very high”), it means you’ve followed the professional rules of conduct and ethics. After this endorsement, you’re given an A, B, or C rating. AV Rating or AV Preeminent is the highest rating you can get in the peer-review process. If you receive an AV rating, it means you’ve been recognized for having high levels of integrity and skill.
