“I am not going to be a Grandma,” Claims Real Housewives’ NeNe Leakes

The confident and outgoing star of Real Housewives of Atlanta is never afraid to speak her mind about the course her life has taken. NeNe Leakes has acted no differently when it comes to the life of her son, Bryson Bryant. Most recently, she reportedly became up in arms about the news that Bryant’s girlfriend was pregnant.

According to the reality television star, she is not going to be a grandma. She raised the question of whether or not the child is even his and has requested a paternity test. While it is understandable that the young, vibrant 42-year-old has reservations about being called something that is generally associated with being old, several other issues arise out of the unwed status of the young couple.

Leakes not only shared her grandmother woes, but she shared her disappointment in her son who recently dropped out of school. The “allegedly” soon-to-be-grandmother fears that she will be the one who is forced to raise and pay for the needs of the child. Although she may have a moral obligation to the child, she is not the one with the legal obligation.

While an unwed couple often has no need for family court, when they decide to separate, the necessity often arises. Paternity is an issue that arises out of the birth of a child out of wedlock. In most states, there is no presumption of paternity when a child is born out of wedlock, and the parent who is seeking to enforce their rights must first obtain a declaration of parentage. With a declaration comes the obligation to pay child support as well as the right to enforce parental rights by obtaining visitation and parenting time.
