Man freed from jail for not paying support for child that isn’t his

He’s been called a deadbeat dad and thrown in jail. He’s accused of running from his obligations as a father and owing more than $50,000 in child support.

The problem is that he says he’s not the father of the child and that being thrown in jail has been an ordeal for him, his wife and their two kids.

Though the case is 700 miles southwest of St. Louis, it’s a fascinating one regardless of geography.

The Texas man, 31, and his wife are sticking together through this tough time, he said. That wasn’t always the case, however. Back in 2006, the couple separated and the husband had a two-night fling with another woman during the separation.

“Young, dumb, foolish,” is how he describes himself in those days.

That fling has had long-lasting repercussions. The other woman claims she was impregnated during those two nights and that the Texas man is the father of her child.

The man’s attorney purchased a DNA test and submitted the results to the court. The result: zero probability that the man is the father of the woman’s child.

He was freed from Tarrant County Jail a few days ago.

He said of his homecoming: “Wow. It was like, ‘Whew!’ ‘Just to get to see my family. Hug my wife. Hug my kids. It was awesome.”

Although the man was no longer legally recognized as the child’s father, by Texas law he was still obligated to pay off the $50,000 in owed child support.

His attorney said the woman agreed to give up her claim to the money, though by law she had no obligation to do so.

It’s always good to see the someone do the right thing, even when they don’t have to.
